What Happens to Your Data
The Basics: What We Collect and Why
When You Register a Domain
To register a domain, we need:
- Your name and organization (if applicable)
- Email address
- Postal address
- Phone number
Why we need this: Domain registries require this information. It's not optional. It's how domain registration works globally.
What happens to it:- We send it to our domain registrars (OVH, Gandi, or Namecheap)
- They send it to the domain registry (like Verisign for .com domains)
- The registry becomes the data controller for that information
About WHOIS (the public domain directory): Domain owner info is traditionally published in WHOIS, where anyone can look it up. We automatically protect you from this:
- WHOIS privacy is ON by default for all YorName domains
- Your name and address are hidden (shown as "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY")
- Only an anonymized email address is visible
- You can turn this off if you want your info public (we don't recommend it)
Your YorName Account
We also store:
- Your login email and password (encrypted)
- Payment history (which payment method you used and when)
- Domain management activity
- Customer support conversations
We never store your credit card numbers, bank details, or other payment method details. Those go directly to payment processors.
Why we store what we do: To provide your account, show your purchase history, and help when things go wrong.
When You Use Our Website or App
Like most websites, we collect:
- Which pages you visit
- Device and browser info
- IP address and general location
Why: To make the service work, fix bugs, and improve the experience.
We use these cookies:- Google Analytics (site traffic and usage)
- Cloudflare Insights (site performance and security)
- Google Play Store cookie (if you use our Android app)
You can block cookies in your browser settings, though some features might not work as well.

Who We Share Your Data With
Domain registrars (OVH, Gandi, and Namecheap): We're a reseller, so we register domains through them. They need your registration info to complete the registration. Your registrar may also be required to share your registration data with ICANN and other regulatory bodies under their own policies.
Domain registries: The registries that control .com, .org, etc. receive your registration info. Once they have it, they're responsible for it under their own policies and ICANN rules.
Payment processors: Depending on how you pay, your transaction is processed by: PayPal, PayPro Global, Omise, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
Cloudflare: We use Cloudflare for network routing and security. Cloudflare processes web requests (including IP addresses) when you use our website and app. Because YorName and SimDif share an account, this applies to both services.
Important: We never see or store your credit card numbers, bank account details, or other payment credentials. Those go directly to the payment processor.
That's it. We don't share your data with marketers, data brokers, or anyone else. No "trusted partners" getting your info for vague purposes.

- Object to certain uses
How to do it: Go to Settings in your YorName account. Most actions (updating info, deleting account) are self-service.

- If you have an active subscription, cancel it first, then delete
- If you have an active domain, you'll need to wait until it expires (or transfer it to another registrar first)

Where Your Data Lives
Your account and website data: Stored on OVH servers in France.
Website backups: Also in France.
Domain registration data: Your registration details are held by the registrar managing your domain (OVH, Gandi, or Namecheap) and passed to the relevant registry and regulatory bodies (such as ICANN). This data is stored according to each registrar's own policies and may be held outside the EU.
Processing: Some data gets sent to payment processors in various countries depending on the service (PayPal in US, Omise in Thailand, etc.)
EU users: Your account and website data stays in the EU. Domain registration data held by registrars and registries may be stored elsewhere, depending on the registrar and registry involved.

How Long We Keep Your Data
While your account is active: We keep everything you need to use the service.
When you close your account: We delete all data immediately (unless you have active domains or subscriptions preventing closure).
If your account goes inactive: If you have no active subscriptions or domain registrations, and your account is completely inactive for 1 year, we automatically delete all your data.
Exception: Domain registration info sent to registries follows their policies, not ours. OVH and Gandi both retain for 1 year (required by French law and GDPR). Namecheap retains data according to its own privacy policy. Registries have their own retention policies.

About Our Approach to Privacy
Unlike most domain registrars, we built YorName with privacy-by-default:
- WHOIS privacy is automatic and free
- We don't monetize your data through ads or "partners"
- We don't store your payment credentials
- Domain prices are set at break-even (we don't profit from domain sales)
- We follow the same ethical principles as our parent company, Simple Different
This is what we mean by "simple and different."
